Ross holds degrees in biology (BA, Thiel College, and MS, University of Guam) and zoology (PhD, University of Hawaii) and was the lead research ecologist for the USGS Northern Appalachian Research Laboratory in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, until retirement in 2007.
